Veliko Tarnovo is walked in a day: Tsarevets Fortress above the Yantra gorge, the craft lanes of Samovodska Charshia and the old town of Varosha on the far bank. Veliko Tarnovo was the capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire until the Ottomans took it in 1393. Today it is a university town.

The town wraps around three bends of the Yantra, and everything that matters sits on one line: Tsarevets on the cliff in the middle, Samovodska Charshia five minutes from it towards the centre, and Varosha across the water. Everything is a few minutes' walk apart, but the streets are steep, so it is the climbs that wear you out.

Its own airport, Gorna Oryahovitsa, 10 kilometres from the centre, has no scheduled passenger flights, cargo only. So the way in is Sofia: a direct coach (Etap-Adress / Grup Plus) takes about 3 h 20 and costs €14.50. That makes Veliko Tarnovo work best as an overnight stop between Sofia and Varna, not a place you fly into directly.

  • Samovodska Charshia

A craft street from the Ottoman period, where blacksmiths, potters and weavers still work in open workshops, free to walk through. It takes 1–2 h, and it is worth timing for a weekend, when the craftspeople are actually at the bench.

  • The old town

A district of timber-framed National Revival houses leaning over the gorge, between Samovodska Charshia and the gorge. The walk takes 1–2 h and costs nothing.

  • Vladishki Bridge

A bridge and viewpoint looking straight across at the west side of Tsarevets and the bend of the Yantra below it — the best photo of the fortress without paying to go in. Most people stay 15–20 min.
