Where to go: five more questions →

None of this sits on most lists: watching the Tsarevets evening show for free from the square, walking Gurko Street to its end instead of stopping at the first photo, and climbing Sveta Gora hill, where the fortress is seen from above instead of below.

All three are free, and none needs booking a week ahead — only the Tsarevets show asks you to check a calendar first, since it runs only occasionally, mostly in summer.

1. The show you watch for free

Tsarevgrad Turnov — Sound and Light is an evening show of light and sound on the fortress itself, running occasionally from spring to autumn and most reliably on summer weekends. Watching from Tsar Asen I Square, in front of the fortress, is free, and it is the same view as the paid VIP platform gets — just a little further back. Show dates are announced by season, and that is the one thing actually worth checking before you travel.

2. Gurko Street to the end, not to the first photo

Gurko Street is the most photographed street in town, its houses hanging over the Yantra — but most people turn back after the first few houses, where the postcard view is. The street runs all the way down to the Stambolov Bridge, and only from that end do you see the whole row of houses in line, not just the first ones. The walk is free, and down and back takes 20–30 min.

3. Sveta Gora — Tsarevets from above

A wooded hill park across the gorge from the fortress, almost always empty, with a path that opens onto a point where the whole fortress is seen from above, from the far side of the Yantra — a view that does not exist from Vladishki Bridge, which sits level with the fortress instead. Entry is free, and the path is not numbered or mapped on site, so you follow the river by feel.

Frequently asked

Before you go

Short answers to what people ask most before setting out.

How do you watch the Tsarevets show for free?

From Tsar Asen I Square, in front of the fortress. Only the VIP platform, with a slightly better view, is paid; the show mostly runs in summer, on weekends.

Where is Gurko Street at its best?

At the far end, by the Stambolov Bridge — that is where the whole row of riverside houses comes into view, not just the first two or three people photograph from the top of the street.

Is there a charge for Sveta Gora?

No. The park and the path to the Tsarevets viewpoint are free all year, with no booking needed.
