Getting around Veliko Tarnovo
Sofia is the only realistic way into Veliko Tarnovo — by bus, about 3 h 20; inside the town itself you walk everywhere.
- Getting in
- Sofia (SOF)
- Bus from Sofia
- direct coach (Etap-Adress / Grup Plus)
- Airport shuttle
- A direct line from Sofia airport

The nearest airport, Gorna Oryahovitsa, is ten kilometres from town, but it has no scheduled passenger route — cargo only. The realistic way in is Sofia: fly into SOF, then direct coach (Etap-Adress / Grup Plus) to the centre, about 3 h 20 for €14.50. Inside Veliko Tarnovo itself you barely need transport at all — everything is on foot.
Why Sofia, not Gorna Oryahovitsa
Gorna Oryahovitsa is closer as the crow flies, only about ten kilometres away, but the airport has no scheduled passenger service — cargo flights only. So the realistic way in stays Sofia, however close that other dot looks on the map.
By bus from Sofia
The direct line (direct coach (Etap-Adress / Grup Plus)) leaves from Sofia's bus terminal and takes about 3 h 20 to central Veliko Tarnovo, ticket €14.50. Anyone flying into SOF also has a direct shuttle, several times a day, with no trip across Sofia to the bus station.

On foot
Tsarevets, the Samovodska Charshia and the old town are within walking range of each other, with the odd climb. A city bus runs to the outskirts and Arbanasi, and a taxi is the simpler option for shorter runs.

What not to do
- Don't look for a flight to Veliko Tarnovo. Gorna Oryahovitsa takes cargo only; the way in runs through Sofia.
- Don't rent a car just for the old town. Everything is within walking distance — a car here only needs somewhere to park.
- Don't leave Sofia after lunch without a room booked. The coach takes about 3 h 20, so you arrive in the evening.
