Berat takes one to two days, and everything stacks up one hillside: a castle where people still live, Mangalem at its foot and Gorica across the Osum. Unesco listed Gjirokastra in 2005 and extended the entry to Berat in 2008. The municipality is still a working town of 62,232 people, and it behaves like one.

The old core has three parts, and the river runs between them. Kalaja is the fortress on its rock on the right bank, Mangalem spreads below it, and Gorica sits on the left bank. The nickname is the town of a thousand windows. Enver Hoxha declared Berat a museum town in June 1961, but the castle is no museum, because an estimated 200 to 400 people live inside the walls and the gate never closes.

Arrivals go through Tirana, by bus or by furgon, the minibus that leaves once it is full. Both cover the 123 km in about 2 h, with about 20 departures a day, and the terminal on the north-west edge of town lies about 2 km from the old quarters. A city bus makes the short hop. Berat has neither an airport nor a railway station, which makes the Tirana bus the whole plan.

Take the castle in the morning, before the heat, since the climb from Mangalem is about 1 km of steep polished cobbles. Count two to three hours with the Onufri Museum. It hangs icons from the 14th to the 19th century in the Cathedral of the Dormition of St Mary. The afternoon belongs to Mangalem and the Ethnographic Museum, and at dusk you cross the stone bridge to Gorica for the evening stroll, the xhiro. The car stays on the flat streets below, where the lanes begin to climb.

Beyond town, the Osum Canyon and the Bogova waterfall are best from April to June, when the water runs. Apollonia, an ancient city about 60 km west, Mount Tomorr for hikers and the Çobo vineyards in the hills are the other trips out. Food is a short list worth keeping, with byrek before noon and tavë kosi at lunch. The pages on where to sleep, what to eat and how to move around fill in the rest.

What to see

What to see in Berat

    Berat Castle

The fortress stands on a rock above the Osum, and nobody has emptied it. Families live behind the walls, so you walk through a village rather than a ruin. Once about 20 churches stood here, most of them from the 13th century, and a red brick minaret is all that remains of the garrison mosque.

    Mangalem

Mangalem fills the foot of the hill with white Ottoman houses, and steep cobbled lanes tie it together. Wear shoes with a grip, because the quarter is best walked slowly in the late afternoon, between the castle and the river, with a stop wherever a doorway opens onto a view.

    Gorica

Gorica occupies the left bank of the Osum and is the quieter half of Berat. It looks across at Mangalem and the castle, so people climb the hill above it for sunset. The lanes climb as steeply as Mangalem's, so go on foot and leave the car behind.

    Onufri Museum

The museum sits inside the Cathedral of the Dormition of St Mary, within the castle walls. Its collection holds icons from the 14th to the 19th century, among them works by Onufri, the 16th-century painter, and by his school. A gilded wooden iconostasis is the reason to come.

    Ethnographic Museum

This museum occupies an 18th-century house in the old quarter and opened as a museum in 1979. It suits the afternoon part of the walk, after the castle and the descent through Mangalem.

    Gorica Stone Bridge

Seven arches carry the bridge 129 m across the Osum, about 10 m above the water, and anyone who stops in the middle gets Mangalem rising on one side and the river sliding away on the other. The first crossing here was timber, from 1780. Stone replaced it later. It is the walking link between Mangalem and Gorica.
