The best time to visit Berat
Spring and early September for the climb, summer for a morning castle and an evening in Gorica, winter for quiet and shorter museum hours.
- Best months
- May–June, September
- Summer
- average high of 31 °C in July and August
- Osum Canyon
- best from April to June

Pick the month for the climb. The castle and its cobbles ask for a cooler hour, the canyon asks for water, and winter changes nothing except the museum timetable. If one month has to be chosen, make it May, when the average high is 23 °C and the sun shines about 8 hours a day.
Through the year
Heat and an early castle
July and August bring an average high of 31 °C and 10 to 11 hours of sun a day. The climb to the castle takes longer in that heat, over cobbles that the sun has been working on since morning. Temperatures above 30 °C are recorded in September too, so early autumn is not automatically cool. The plan that works is simple: castle at opening time or late in the afternoon, a long lunch in the shade of the old town in between, and Gorica at sunset.
The xhiro, the slow evening stroll, runs before and during sunset, and a table on a terrace beside the Osum fits that hour. Noon belongs indoors. August also brings the pilgrimage on Mount Tomorr, Christian on 15 August and Bektashi from 20 to 25 August.

Spring and autumn
The highs run to 23 °C in May, 28 °C in June, 27 °C in September and 22 °C in October. May, June and September are the best months by climate. It is warm enough for a terrace by the river and mild enough for the climb to the castle. The Onufri museum opens every day in the summer season, to the end of October, and the winter schedule applies from November.
The trips have their own seasons. The canyon of the Osum and the Bogova waterfall are at their fullest from April to June, when the water justifies the drive, and late summer leaves them with less water. Mount Tomorr can be climbed from June to October, a climb of three to four hours each way.

Quiet and the museum schedule
In January and February the average high is 11 to 12 °C with 3 to 4 hours of sun a day. Berat in those months is a town for wrapped-up walkers, with short light, and the castle still open as the neighbourhood it is, since people live inside it and the gate is never locked.
The museum timetable does change. From 1 November to 30 April the Onufri museum is open Tuesday to Saturday from 9 to 16, on Sunday from 9 to 14, and closed on Mondays. The Church of the Holy Trinity is often shut for restoration, but that depends on the work and not on the season.
