Sveti Stefan was an ordinary fishing village on an islet joined to the mainland by a narrow isthmus, until the Yugoslav state turned it into a hotel in the 1960s — the houses stayed, they just became rooms inside. The Aman resort was closed from 2021 to July 2026 over a dispute about beach access; it's now open again, still a private complex, but with a guided walk for visitors without a room booked.
You still can't walk onto the islet on your own, but since the reopening there's a guided tour for visitors without a room booked. Without the tour, the classic postcard shot, red roofs against green sea, is taken from the road above the village or from one of the two beaches flanking the isthmus. One is public, the other belongs to the hotel.

Right next door is Villa Miločer, the former summer residence of the royal Karađorđević family, today also part of the hotel complex but with grounds you can walk through. Since the reopening, the Queen's Beach beside the villa has been reserved for hotel guests from 8am to 8pm; from there it's a half-hour walk on to Pržno.

Two things you probably did not know
Sveti Stefan was a fishing village until the state moved its inhabitants out in 1955 and turned the whole island into a hotel. The houses kept their outsides and became rooms inside.
In the sixties and seventies Sophia Loren, Kirk Douglas, Elizabeth Taylor and Sylvester Stallone stayed here. The island was the Yugoslav answer to the French Riviera, with Hollywood guests and prices to match.
