Varna is Bulgaria's city on the Black Sea, where the old centre and the beach sit side by side and the airport is 7 km away as the crow flies. The Roman Thermae downtown are the largest ancient building in the country, and the Archaeological Museum holds the oldest worked gold in the world. Swimming season runs Jun–Sep, peaking in July and August.
The city splits into two bands that join on foot: the old centre with the Roman Thermae, the cathedral and the museums, and the Sea Garden running along the shore to the beach. With two days, one goes to the city, one to the sea; a third, if there is one, opens up day trips to the Stone Forest or Aladzha Monastery.
Varna Airport (VAR) sits inside the city, not on its edge: bus bus 409 to the centre runs into the centre in about 20 min, for €1. That makes Varna a rare beach city reached without an hour-long transfer.
The Dolphinarium and the Aquarium are the family stops here, but both shift with the season: the dolphin shows run Tuesday to Sunday, closed Mondays, and the aquarium keeps longer summer hours than winter ones. Neither is a casual add-on — both want a slot of their own in the day.
