Where to go: five more questions →

From Varna four destinations fit into a day trip: Aladzha Monastery and the Stone Forest each take half a day, Balchik and Nesebar want a full one. With only a spare third day, pick one of the first two rather than trying all four.

Aladzha Monastery and the Stone Forest — the nearest

Aladzha, a rock-hewn monastery, is 15–20 min from the city by bus or car, entry €5 entry plus transport separately — half a day. The Stone Forest (Pobiti Kamani), a field of natural stone pillars, is 30 min away by car or organised tour, entry €2.56 entry — also half a day. Both fit into the same afternoon if you start early, but then neither gets more than an hour on site.

What to know in advance

  • Nesebar as a full day, not half. bus, 1 h 30–2 h each way leaves little time if you start after lunch.
  • Aladzha and the Stone Forest the same day? Possible, but only starting in the morning — both then become half a day each, not a full one.
  • Nesebar charges per site. The churches and museum sell tickets individually and as a combined ticket for several sites — pick at the ticket office based on how much you plan to see.

Frequently asked

Before you go

Short answers to what people ask most before setting out.

Which day trip from Varna is best with only half a day?

Aladzha Monastery or the Stone Forest. Aladzha is 15–20 min from the city, the Stone Forest 30 min, and both fit into half a day.

Can Nesebar be done in half a day?

Not sensibly. The bus takes 1 h 30–2 h each way — plan it as a full day.

Not necessarily — the churches and museum sell tickets both individually and as a combined pass; choose at the ticket office based on how many sites you plan to see.
