Mistakes everyone makes in Valletta
The mistakes are the Hypogeum without a slot, Sunday in Valletta, Comino without a pass and the co-cathedral in the middle of the cruise hour.
- The Hypogeum
- €35, last minute €50
- The co-cathedral
- Mon–Sat 9–16.45, shut on Sundays
- Comino
- free landing pass, bluelagooncomino.mt

Almost every mistake in Valletta sits on a number, and the numbers are short: ten people at a time underground, one day of the week, one free pass, one hour when the ships arrive. Fix those four and the city runs smoothly, with time left over for what you came to see, and a plan that does not depend on luck. Each section below names the mistake, what it costs and what to do in its place.
The Hypogeum without a slot
The Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum lets in only ten people at a time, and the standard ticket costs €35. If the slot you want is gone, a last-minute ticket exists at €50, but it goes on sale the day before and is limited to four per person. Buy the standard ticket ahead of the flights and hotel, and let the rest of the plan form around that appointment. Photography is banned inside. Children aged one to five are not admitted, which matters for families who book as a group.

Sunday in Valletta
On Sundays the co-cathedral is shut, the Lascaris War Rooms are shut, and the guns on the Saluting Battery stay silent, since the noon and 4 pm salutes run only from Monday to Saturday. Spend the day at Fort St Elmo instead, where the In Guardia re-enactment runs from 11 to 12 on Sundays until 31 December 2026. Other visitors enter from noon on those Sundays. Or leave the city altogether, for Mdina or Gozo.
The co-cathedral at 11
Arriving at eleven puts you in the line when the ships have emptied onto the quay: in 2025 the port received 772,664 day visitors from cruise ships, and a line of more than 45 minutes is possible between 10.00 and 13.30. Go at 9.00 when the doors open, or after 14.30, and buy the ticket online beforehand. The Caravaggio in the Oratory is better met before the groups arrive than after them, and the audio guide comes with the ticket.
Comino without a pass
Reaching Comino by boat does not by itself give you the right to step ashore. Anyone landing needs a free pass for one of three time slots and gets a wristband, and staying without one carries a fine. A ferry ticket cannot be swapped to another operator, so the pass, the boat and the return all have to match. A passenger who stays on the boat needs no pass, which makes a cruise past the lagoon the simple option.
State Rooms and closed days
The State Rooms of the Grand Master's Palace are closed until 1.30 pm on 28 October, 18 November and 2 December 2026, while the Armoury stays open, and the Throne Room is closed until further notice. Every Heritage Malta site shuts on 1 January, on Good Friday and on 24, 25 and 31 December. Put the museums on other days and keep those mornings for walking. The Upper Barrakka Gardens are free to enter and untouched by any of this.
The bus without small change
The drivers carry little change, so pay by contactless card or with coins counted out in advance. A 12-journey card costs €19 and can be shared, which turns the bus into the simplest purchase of the trip, and a single ticket is valid for two hours. The summer fare lasts until 18 October and the winter fare begins on 19 October.
