The best time to visit Novi Sad

Novi Sad has no sea and no mountain to soften summer — May, June and September strike the best balance of temperature and crowds, and since Exit left in 2025, July no longer brings a festival crush on top of the heat.

Where to go: five more questions →

Novi Sad's calendar comes down to two things: how hot the city gets, and how muddy the road to Fruška Gora or Karlovci turns. May, June and September strike the best balance of weather and crowds — even though those same two months bring the year's wettest stretch. The table below turns 'July' or 'January' into an actual number of degrees.

Month by month

ItemAmount
January–February−2 to 7 °C; coldest, occasional fog and snow
March–April2 to 18 °C; the first outdoor days after winter, though April can swing from sun to rain within a day
May–June12 to 27 °C; the most comfortable stretch for the fortress and the quay, but also the two wettest months
July–August16 to 29 °C; hottest, individual days over 35 °C
September–October7 to 24 °C; autumn without spring's mood swings, the calmer of the two shoulder seasons
November3 to 11 °C; grey, the turn towards winter
December−1 to 5 °C; cold, occasional fog over the Danube

Summer is hot, but the river helps

July and August run at around 29°C on average, but individual days in either month can push past 35°C — there's no sea to take the edge off. What Novi Sad does have is the Štrand, the city beach on the Danube: a day ticket in season, from 1 May to 30 September, is €0.60, and outside that period entry is free, though with no facilities or lifeguards on the water.

Rain changes a trip to Fruška Gora

May and June carry the most rainy days of the year — on the 1991–2020 average, about eighty-seven rainy days a year, peaking in exactly those two months. That does not spoil the city, since the centre is walked under an umbrella, but it changes the wine road and the monasteries: a muddy path to Krušedol or Grgeteg is not the same outing as a dry one, and the forecast that morning matters more than setting off by car regardless.

Since Exit left

Until its 2025 edition, the Exit festival filled the Petrovaradin fortress and the city's hotels every July, and a room for that week was booked months ahead. After that edition the festival left Serbia, so anyone booking a July stay expecting crowds and higher prices is paying for something that no longer exists.

Winter is cold and quiet

January averages −2 to 4°C, with occasional fog over the Danube and some snow; museums keep the same year-round schedule, it is only the fortress that stands empty and windy. This is the season for indoor stops — the underground galleries, the Museum of Vojvodina — not for a long walk along the quay.

The average high is around 29°C in July and August, but individual days can top 35°C — the city has no sea to soften it, only the Danube and the Štrand.

No. The festival left Serbia after its 2025 edition, so July no longer brings the crowds or the higher accommodation prices that came with it.
