Vršac is a weekend trip: the medieval tower above the town opens on Saturdays and Sundays from April to October, and the vineyards and the Vršac Mountains begin just east of the centre. The best weekend of the year is Grožđebal, the grape harvest festival, in mid-September.
The tower is a donjon, the best-preserved part of a medieval fortress on the hill above the town. Tradition credits it to Despot Đurađ Branković, around 1439, while historians also place on the same spot the Hungarian fortress of Érdsomlyó, first recorded in 1323. It reopened in 2015 after six years of restoration, with a shingle roof over the battlements that started an argument in town. On weekdays it can only be visited by a group booked through the City Museum or the Vršac Tourist Organisation.

Grožđebal runs for four days, Thursday to Sunday, with tastings and local wineries showing their wines; in 2026 it is from 17 to 20 September, for the sixty-eighth time.

What to see in Vršac

The Vršac tower
A twenty-metre donjon on a 399-metre hill. Since 2023 it has held a permanent exhibition on life in a medieval Banat fortress, and the viewing level on the third floor looks over the town and the plain.

Gudurički Vrh
Vojvodina's highest point at 641 metres — a hundred metres above Crveni Čot on Fruška Gora. It is not behind the tower but nine kilometres east of the centre in a straight line; the Vršac Mountains have been a protected landscape since 1982 and carry on into Romania.

Two things you probably did not know
Guduricki vrh in the Vrsac Mountains is the highest point in Vojvodina at 641 metres — a hundred metres above Crveni Cot on Fruska Gora, at 539. The Vrsac Tower stands on a lower hill, at 399 metres.
The Vrsac vineyards are among the oldest in Vojvodina and in the nineteenth century were among the largest in Europe. Phylloxera destroyed them at the end of that century, and they were replanted on American rootstock.
