Mistakes everyone makes in Sarajevo

The mistakes are the Tunnel without marks, a Monday without a plan, the combined ticket across two days, the joint museum ticket for three and walking off the path.

None of the mistakes visitors make in Sarajevo is random, because each one sits on a plain fact: a ticket desk that takes no cards, a weekday on which a door is shut, a ticket that expires at night, a total that does not add up and ground with mines in it. Each fact costs nothing to know and can cost an afternoon to ignore.

The Tunnel of Hope without marks

The ticket desk at the Tunnel of Hope takes no credit cards and no foreign currency. A ticket costs €10.23 (20 KM). Draw marks from a cash machine in the city before you set out for Butmir, because euros are sometimes taken in town but not here. Taxis in Sarajevo want cash too, so a trip back to town to find a bank machine is the expensive version of this mistake. Arrive with the right notes and the desk becomes the easy part of the day, while the tunnel itself takes the time.

Monday and Sunday

Monday closes the National Museum, and Sunday closes the annexes of the Museum of Sarajevo, though the Jewish Museum opens from 10 to 13. The cable car does not start before noon on a Monday in either version of its timetable. Fill those days with what runs every day, and the plan survives both. The City Hall is open daily 9–17, so it takes the Monday morning without trouble. The War Childhood Museum is open daily 11–19, last entry 18.30.

The cable car without checking the timetable

The official cable car site, zicara.ba, shows two timetables that contradict each other, one as an image and one as text, and they disagree about Monday to Wednesday. A ticket is valid only on the day you buy it. Plan the ride for the afternoon, buy the ticket at the station that same day and keep the morning for the City Hall or a museum, whose hours do not depend on a schedule that contradicts itself.

The combined ticket across two days

The combined ticket for the City Hall and the cable car costs €17.89 (35 KM). Bought separately, the return ride is €15.34 (30 KM) and the hall €5.11 (10 KM). The saving vanishes the moment the ticket is used on two different days, because it is valid only on the day of purchase. Visit the City Hall in the morning and ride the cable car in the afternoon, and the arithmetic works.

The joint ticket for three museums

The joint ticket covers all five annexes of the Museum of Sarajevo: €10.23 (20 KM). A single entry is €2.56 (5 KM), so three museums cost less than the joint ticket and five cost more. The joint ticket rewards completists and punishes everyone else. Buy single tickets, unless the plan really includes the house, the bezistan, the Jewish Museum and the two others.

Leaving the path on Trebević

The areas around the bobsled track are suspected of mines. Entry is free, with no fence and no guard, so nobody will stop you from stepping off the concrete into the trees. Keep to the marked path, since the safe ground is the part somebody has marked. From the upper station of the cable car the walk down takes 5 to 10 minutes, which is short enough that a detour is never needed to fill time.

Winter in the valley

In winter the air over Sarajevo gets worse. Particle concentrations measured there in the winter of 2023 were higher than in Beijing, and the main cause is wood and coal burning in stoves in the evening, according to a Paul Scherrer Institute release of 22 January 2026. Spend winter days in museums and take the skiing to the mountains.
