The best time to visit Sarajevo
Spring and early autumn for sightseeing, summer for the film festival and the heat, winter for skiing on the mountains and smog in the valley.

The month to pick in Sarajevo depends on why you are coming. Walking the old town rewards milder days, the film festival fills August, skiing owns the winter, and the valley itself turns grey and smoky in the cold months. Four reasons give four different answers, and the climate table below sorts the weather before the rest of the page sorts the plans.
Through the year
Heat and the film festival
July and August bring the warmest days of the year, with an average daily high of 27.8 °C in July and 28.3 °C in August and nights that fall to around 14 °C. August is also the driest month, with 62.9 mm of rain, so a day of stone streets and open squares works better than in any other season. The 32nd Sarajevo Film Festival runs from 14 to 21 August 2026, and dates for 2027 have not been announced.
Summer is also when the Tunnel of Hope keeps its long hours, and the Vrelo Bosne park suits a hot afternoon under the trees. Tunnel hours: 1 Apr–31 Oct 8.30–17, 1 Nov–31 Mar 9–16. Entry to Vrelo Bosne: €3.07 (6 KM).

Spring and autumn
These are the months for walking. The average daily high is 21.4 °C in May and 25.4 °C in June, then 22.5 °C in September and 17.3 °C in October, which is comfortable for a day that starts on Baščaršija and ends on the hill. The price is rain, because May, June, September and October each get roughly 88 to 91 mm.
October is the wettest of the four at 91.4 mm, so pack a jacket and plan the Tunnel of Hope and the museums for the grey afternoons. The tunnel's summer season runs until 31 October, after which it switches to shorter winter hours.

Snow, smog and skiing
January averages a high of 4.1 °C and a low of minus 2.9 °C, and December a high of 4.3 °C with a low of minus 1.7 °C. Snow falls on about 22 days a year. The cold has a second side in the valley, where particle levels in winter are higher than in Beijing, a result published by the Paul Scherrer Institute on 22 January 2026 from measurements taken in the winter of 2023, and the main cause is wood and coal burned in stoves in the evening.
That makes winter a time for museums by day and mountains by choice. Jahorina and Bjelašnica are the skiing options, and last season an adult day pass on Jahorina was €37–44 (73–86 KM). Prices for 2026/27 have not been published. In the city the Tunnel of Hope opens 9.00 to 16.00 from 1 November to 31 March, with the last entry at 15.30, and the National Museum is shut on 1 and 2 January. The War Childhood Museum is closed on 1 January and open until 16.00 on 31 December. A new event, the WARM festival, runs from 24 to 28 November 2026.
