In Sarajevo you sleep either inside the bazaar or along a tram line, and the whole difference is whether the first ticket of the day starts with a walk or with a ride costing €1.12 (2.20 KM). The old town is small. Everything beyond it is reached by tram, trolleybus or taxi, from the cable car to the tunnel, so the choice of district decides how many of those rides you pay for.

Baščaršija

On foot to everything

Baščaršija is the original centre of the city. From a bed here the Sebilj, the Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque and the Latin Bridge are a short walk away, and Morića Han is a few lanes on. The nearest hostels on Hostelworld in October 2026 are Hostel Vagabond at 0.08 km from the centre, FG Boutique Hostel at 0.09 km, Leopold Chillout Hostel at 0.12 km and Balkan Han at 0.42 km. You step out of the door and into the lanes, with no timetable to learn.

That position has a price. Dorm beds start from from €10 (dorm bed), but the listing shows the lowest rate for the dates you choose. The closer a bed sits to the centre, the more it tends to cost. For a first visit of two or three days this is still the district to pick, because the evenings in the lanes are worth more than the saving. Cheaper beds exist farther out, and the question is whether you prefer to pay with money or with rides.

Marijin Dvor

The tram at the door

Marijin Dvor is the modern business and administrative quarter, and the trams and trolleybuses pass through it at €1.12 (2.20 KM) a ride. One guide from 2026 calls it the easiest base for reaching the main sights, and another describes it as stylish. Do not count on walking from here to the bazaar. This is a district where the vehicle is the point, so buy the day ticket, which pays off from the fourth ride.

Bistrik

Quiet and the cable car

Bistrik is a hillside district, calmer than the centre, and the lower station of the Sarajevo cable car stands here. Hostel & Guest House Bistrik sits 0.95 km from the centre by the listing, so the bazaar is about a kilometre away. Staying here suits anyone who wants the hill on day two without a ride to reach it. It also asks you to climb a few streets back after dinner. That is the trade.

Ilidža

Greenery, the Tunnel and Vrelo Bosne

Ilidža is greener and much farther out, at the end of tram 3, which reaches Baščaršija in about half an hour. The district is also where Vrelo Bosne and Butmir lie, and Butmir is the home of the Tunnel of Hope. The airport is close by. A base here suits those who care more about the springs and the tunnel than about the old town, and who accept the evening tram back to the bazaar as the price of waking up somewhere green. Tram 3 is the line that decides everything here.

Price and when to book

Prices first. Hostelworld lists 17 properties in Sarajevo, with dorm beds from from €10 (dorm bed), and the rate moves with the dates you search. A three-star hotel has no confirmed per-person figure, because the guides quote only the price of a room, so compare the rooms on your own dates. A local tax is added to the stay. Book early for the film festival, which ran from 14 to 21 August in 2026, and for the first WARM festival, set for 24 to 28 November 2026.

A bus runs from the airport to Baščaršija, and the ride takes about 30 min. The ticket is €2.56 (5 KM). A taxi into the centre costs €10–15 (20–30 KM), and it is paid in cash in marks only.
