The best time to visit Thessaloniki

Thessaloniki sits on the sea, which keeps its winter milder than its latitude suggests — summer still tops 28°C, and snow falls now and then when Vardaris, a cold wind down the Axios valley, blows through.

Where to go: five more questions →

Thessaloniki picks its month by the same rule as the rest of Greece — May–Jun · Sep–Oct bring the best temperatures without the worst crowds. Unlike the region's inland cities, winter here rarely drops below zero, since the city sits on the sea; summer still runs hot. The table below turns each month into degrees and rainy days.

Winter is milder than in cities further from the sea

The January average is around seven degrees — warmer than the region's inland capitals, where the winter average often drops below two. The sea heats up slower than it cools, and that same lag pulls the temperature up in winter too. Summer erases the difference: July and August average around 27–28°C, with days that regularly clear 30°C.

Vardaris and the occasional snow

Vardaris is a cold north-westerly wind that funnels down the Axios (Vardar) valley, sharpened by the shape of that valley, and it is strongest in winter, when pressure over eastern Europe sits higher than over the Aegean. It drags in cold, dry air from the north and is one reason coastal Thessaloniki still sees snow now and then, even with a January average close to seven degrees.

Rain changes day trips, not the city itself

December and March carry the most rainy days of the year; neither spoils a visit to the city, since almost everything in Thessaloniki is seen indoors or in short walks between buildings. Halkidiki and the gorge below Olympus are a different matter — a beach in the rain is not a beach, and the Enipeas path turns slippery after a heavy shower.
