Where to stay in Thessaloniki

Thessaloniki comes down to a choice between the walkable centre around Aristotelous and Ladadika and the quieter, hillier Ano Poli — there is no serious third option.

Where to go: five more questions →

Thessaloniki has no neighbourhood picked for a beach or a river — it comes down to how far you walk to the White Tower and Ladadika, and how many steps feel acceptable in the evening. The centre covers almost every case; Ano Poli is the swap when quiet matters more than proximity.

The centre — Aristotelous and Ladadika

Everything a first day in Thessaloniki covers sits within about twenty minutes on foot: the pedestrian zone around Aristotelous Square, Ladadika by the port, the White Tower on the waterfront and the Rotunda a little further towards Ano Poli. Kapani and Modiano are right there, so breakfast and dinner need no separate planning. For a two- or three-day stay, this is the one area where you barely need to ride anything.

Ano Poli — quiet, at the cost of a climb

The upper town above the walls, the one part the 1917 fire never reached: cobbles, houses with overhanging wooden storeys, the Heptapyrgion at the top and Vlatadon Monastery with peacocks in its courtyard. Bus 23 runs up and down on the same timetable all year; walk it instead and the climb takes about forty minutes, uphill the whole way. It is quiet here at night, which is both the appeal and the price of the choice.

What to check before booking

  • Distance from Aristotelous, not from the municipal boundary. Some listings count the centre more widely than the pedestrian zone the sightseeing actually covers.
  • The number of steps in Ano Poli. The same area that offers quiet in the evening demands a climb by day to any address off the main street.
  • The price a booking site shows leaves out the tourist tax. For a three-star hotel it comes to €1.50 (Nov–Mar) · €5 (Apr–Oct), for 3-star per person per night, paid at the front desk.
