Day trips from Warsaw
A palace and a forest on the city bus, Chopin's birthplace outside the city, and Łódź an hour away by fast train.

- Żelazowa Wola

The two easiest day trips from Warsaw need neither a car nor a tour: Wilanów, the Baroque palace of King Sobieski, and Kampinos, a national park of dunes and pine forest, and both run on the city bus and the same ticket as the metro. Further out are Żelazowa Wola, Chopin's birthplace, which lies outside the city network, and Łódź, a former textile town an hour away by fast train. The real question is how much time you have, because each of the four takes half a day or a whole one.
Wilanów and Kampinos both sit in the first zone of the city transport network, so neither needs a special ticket: the return costs €2.02, which is two ordinary 75-minute tickets. The city ticket does not cover Żelazowa Wola or Łódź, and for Łódź you buy a ticket for each direction, cheapest bought ahead because fares are dynamic.
Wilanów — the palace that survived the war
King John III Sobieski built Wilanów between 1677 and 1696 as a summer residence, and the palace was damaged in the war but not demolished after the 1944 uprising, so unlike the Old Town it is the original, and you see it in the Baroque rooms and in the gardens. You ride city bus (116, 180 or 519), and it takes about 30 min.
The palace costs €15.97 from April to October and a little less in winter, and the park alone is €3.42. On Thursdays the palace, gardens and park are free, but palace tickets are limited, so go when it opens. The palace is open from 10:00 to 16:00 with last entry at 15:00, and the park from 9:00 to 18:00. Count on half a day, and if you arrive in the afternoon, the park is what you will have left.

Kampinos — a forest with moose
Kampinos National Park, founded in 1959, covers 385 square kilometres of sand dunes, marsh and pine northwest of the city, and has been a UNESCO biosphere reserve since 2000. Moose live in it, and it has some 360 kilometres of walking trails and 200 of cycling routes. You get to the entrance by bus 210 from Metro Młociny, the ride takes about 30 min, and the park itself is free to enter.
Plan a full day, because the park only starts once you are on a trail. Bring water and food for the whole day. It is not for anyone who dislikes long walks or expects a landscaped park with benches, since this is real forest.

Żelazowa Wola — where Chopin was born
Chopin's birthplace stands in a village 54 kilometres west of Warsaw, in a park, and Chopin recitals are held there in summer. Check the museum's site for the schedule and ticket price before you set out, because they decide whether you go at the weekend, and count on a trip outside the city network, with a change.
Count on half a day for the journey, the house and the park. It is not for anyone who does not care for classical music, since there are no big sights here, and the reason to come is the house where the composer was born.

Łódź — a factory town an hour away
Łódź grew from a settlement of 190 people in 1798 to an industrial city of over 500,000 in 115 years, which is why it was called the Polish Manchester. The fastest train, the Intercity Prząśniczka, reaches Łódź Fabryczna in 1 h 05, and a second-class ticket starts from €10.95. The city emptied after 1989 when the mills stopped, and today the old factories hold the Manufaktura shopping centre and the OFF Piotrkowska club complex.
The main street, Piotrkowska, is 4.2 kilometres long and pedestrian in its northern part since 1990, so you eat, sit and look at Art Nouveau and Renaissance Revival fronts in the same row. Łódź became a UNESCO City of Film in 2017, because the film school of 1948, where Wajda and Polański studied, is here. It is not for anyone who wants postcard sights, since Łódź is a town for aimless walking, nor for anyone with just one day in Warsaw.

Kraków and the Masurian Lakes — too far for a day
Kraków is possible as a day by train, but it is 2 h 15 to 2 h 20 each way, with twelve fast trains a day, so half the day is spent in a carriage. It only makes sense if Kraków is not in your plan already, and then two nights there are better.

For the Masurian Lakes it is PKP Intercity train, direct from Warszawa Zachodnia station, the ride takes about 4 h 10 min, and a one-way ticket is €16–19 (PLN 71–83). That is a weekend, not a day trip.

If you can pick only one
- One free day, first time in Warsaw: Wilanów, since it is close and free on Thursdays.
- You like nature and walking: Kampinos, a full day, with water and food in the backpack.
- You love Chopin: Żelazowa Wola, half a day, and check the recital schedule before you go.
- You want another city, without a hotel: Łódź, an hour by train.
