Where to stay in Sibiu

In Sibiu the area isn't chosen by a transport line — the city is too small for that to matter; it's chosen by how many steps lead to the room and how close it sits to the three main squares.

Where to go: five more questions →

Sibiu has no area chosen for a river or a beach — the whole old town fits into a half-hour walk end to end. The Upper Town holds three squares and nearly every sight on the main list, the Lower Town below the fortification walls is quieter and sees fewer visitors, linked to the upper part by stairways and passages such as the Stairs Passage.

The Upper Town — around three squares

Grand Square, Small Square and Huet Square form the core of Sibiu, linked by the Liars' Bridge and lanes as narrow as in any medieval town in this part of Transylvania. The Brukenthal Museum, the Evangelical Cathedral tower and nearly everything on the main list sit within a fifteen-minute walk from here. The bed price follows that closeness — it's highest in exactly this part of town.

The Lower Town — below the walls

The Lower Town (Orașul de Jos) once sat outside the city walls, settled by craftsmen whose houses still carry the distinctive roof windows shaped like eyes. Stairways and passages through the fortifications lead up to the Upper Town, the best known being the Stairs Passage. Evenings here are noticeably quieter than around Grand Square, and the walk between the two parts takes just a few minutes, no transport needed.

What to check before booking

  • Walking distance to Grand Square, not to the edge of the old town on a map. The walls are an irregular shape, so an address 'in the centre' can be five minutes' walk from the square or fifteen.
  • Cobblestones and stairways aren't kind to a wheeled case. The Lower Town's streets and the passages through the walls are steep and stone-paved; a larger bag is easier carried than dragged.
  • The Brukenthal Museum and the towers don't open on Mondays. Anyone booking a place near the sights should also check which day of the week they arrive.

Frequently asked

Before you go

Short answers to what people ask most before setting out.

Which area is best for a first stay in Sibiu?

The Upper Town around the three squares — every main sight is walkable, nothing needs a ride.

Is the Lower Town far from the centre?

No — stairways and passages through the walls, like the Stairs Passage, connect it to the Upper Town in a few minutes on foot.

How much do you save staying in the Lower Town?

A bed costs less than by Grand Square, for a short walk instead of a ride — in a city this size, the price gap comes from the type of stay, not the distance.
