The best time to visit Bucharest
Bucharest has a continental climate with no sea to soften it — summer can push past 30°C, winter is cold and grey, and May, June and September strike the best balance of weather and crowds.
- Best
- May, June and September
- Hottest
- July–August, average highs around 30°C
- Coldest
- January, averaging −5 to 3°C

Two things pick the month for Bucharest: how hot or cold the city runs, and whether sitting in a park or on an outdoor terrace is even comfortable. May, June and September deliver both — no weather extremes and a city that isn't as packed as it is in July. The full spread from winter lows to summer highs, month by month, is in the table below.
Month by month
Average of daily minima and maxima, 1991–2020 — not individual records
Summer is hot
August's average high is around 30°C, but individual days in July and August regularly top 33°C, since the city has no sea and no nearby mountain to cool the heat down. Travel then and the plan is to put indoor stops (the Athenaeum, MNAC, the Village Museum) in the afternoon and outdoor ones (Lipscani, the parks) in the morning.

What changes with the month in the mountains
The trip to Sinaia and Peleș Castle depends on the weather more than the city does: 1 h 34 (one way) by train is the same all year, but fog and snow in the mountains change the plan faster than they do down in Bucharest.
