Mistakes everyone makes in Bucharest

Line 783 was retired in 2023, the Palace of the Parliament won't let you in without a booking, and a public transport ticket doesn't cover the metro — mistakes that cost time here.

Where to go: five more questions →

Most mistakes in Bucharest aren't about money but about timing — the wrong bus line, a missed booking, the wrong day for a museum. The six below stop costing time as soon as the day and the line are known in advance.

Looking for line 783

Bus 783 from the airport was retired in December 2023 and replaced by line 100, but the old number still circulates in accommodation listings, forums and older guides. Anyone at the airport looking for 783 specifically loses time hunting for something that no longer exists.

The Palace of the Parliament without a booking

You can't walk into the Palace of the Parliament on the spot — yes, 24 h ahead (phone), and tickets aren't sold online. Anyone who arrives without booking ahead is left with the outside view of the building only.

The metro instead of an STB ticket, or the other way round

A public transport ticket (STB — bus, tram, trolleybus) doesn't cover the metro (Metrorex), and the other way round — two separate networks, two tickets. Anyone buying one expecting it to cover both pays again at the station gate.

The Romanian Athenaeum outside its narrow window

A look inside the Romanian Athenaeum follows the Philharmonic's monthly schedule, outside rehearsals and concerts — currently Mon–Thu 9–10 (before rehearsals), closed to individual visitors the rest of the week (Fri–Sun (rehearsal/concert schedule-dependent)). Anyone stopping by outside the announced slot sees the façade only.

The Village Museum on the wrong day

The Dimitrie Gusti Village Museum is closed Monday, Tuesday — anyone arriving on one of those days is left outside the gate.

Sinaia and Peleș as a half-day trip

Sinaia is 1 h 34 (one way) away, so the trip there and back with a look round the castle doesn't fit into half a day. Peleș Castle is also closed Mon–Tue and 2 Nov–1 Dec 2026 (annual closure) — anyone setting off without checking the date can arrive at a shut gate.

Before you go

Short answers to what people ask most before setting out.

Does bus 783 still run from Bucharest airport?

No — it was retired in 2023 and replaced by line 100, which runs the same route.

Can you get into the Palace of the Parliament without booking?

No — yes, 24 h ahead (phone), entry is guided-tour only.

Can Sinaia and Peleș Castle be done in half a day?

Not practically — the journey is 1 h 34 (one way), making it a full-day trip, and worth checking the castle isn't closed that date.
