Belgrade to Thessaloniki without a train: days, not hours

The bus and the car each cost a day in each direction, the plane an hour and a quarter. Which is why two days in Thessaloniki by bus take four.
For anyone travelling the Balkans overland, Belgrade to Thessaloniki is the leg where the railway runs out, and the choice between bus, car and plane isn't measured in hours on the road but in how much of the stay is left. The bus and the car each take a whole day in each direction, the plane an hour and a quarter — so two days in Thessaloniki by bus mean four days on the move.
No train, and no way round
The direct Belgrade–Thessaloniki train was cut from year-round to summer-only in 2020, stopped during the pandemic and has not run since. There is no detour either: the Belgrade–Sofia train has also ceased, and the Sofia–Thessaloniki train no longer runs on the Greek section. Every 'rail' combination today ends on a bus, so it's more honest to plan on the bus from the start.
Belgrade–Thessaloniki by rail has not existed since 2020, and you can no longer reach Greece by train via Sofia either.
Saves a night, not a day
The fastest Flixbus run takes fourteen hours and twenty minutes, with departures from 6.40am to 7pm. A day departure means the day is gone; a night one saves a hotel night, but the border is crossed twice and the sleep happens in a seat, so the first day in Thessaloniki is a recovery day. Either way the bus costs a day in each direction, and that's the price the ticket doesn't show.
A day's drive, but the car stays with you
The route runs on the motorway through Niš and Preševo, then across North Macedonia and into Greece at Evzoni: a day's driving, two borders and tolls in all three countries. In Thessaloniki itself you don't need a car — the city has had a metro since late 2024, reaching Kalamaria since August 2026. The car pays off only when Thessaloniki is the first stop rather than the destination: if Halkidiki, Olympus or Meteora come next, the day of driving is shared across several places.

The only one that leaves the stay whole
Air Serbia runs the only non-stop, one flight a day, about an hour and a quarter in the air. The airport is thirteen kilometres from the city, with the 01X bus to the centre by day and the 01N by night, so door to door it's half a day. It's the only option in which two days in Thessaloniki stay two days.
Two days in the city — two by plane; four by bus or car

So the question isn't how to reach Thessaloniki most cheaply, but what happens afterwards. If it's only the city, fly. If the trip goes on, drive. The bus makes sense for anyone whose time is cheaper than the ticket — and who is ready to count a two-day stay as four.
Greece, in brief
What now
If this sounds like your trip, start here.
- Don't wait for the train — the direct line has been gone since 2020 and isn't coming back.
- From Belgrade, choose between a day of driving and an hour and a half of flying, by what your time is worth.
- Leave at least two days: fifteen monuments are on the UNESCO list, and the metro is new.
