Where to go: five more questions →

Two days in Kragujevac split into the town and its surroundings: day one is Milošev Venac, Amidža's Konak and the Šumarice memorial park, all on foot or a short city-bus ride; day two is Lake Gruža and Borač, which only a car reaches.

Day 1

The centre and Šumarice

09:00

Milošev venac and the Amidža Konak, what is left of Prince Miloš's court complex, built 1819–1824 — the only surviving building of the group. The Old Church from 1818 stands in the same grounds.

10:30

The Princely Serbian Theatre, Serbia's first, founded in 1835. The building isn't toured on its own; catch a performance day and a ticket is €2.56–5.11.

12:00

Lunch at a kafana in the centre: €4.70–5.50 for the set lunch, or €4.25–12.80 for a main course of Šumadija cooking.

14:00

Šumarice and the 21 October Museum, a 352-hectare memorial park on the 1941 execution ground. Allow 2–3 h; entry €0.85 / group €1.28, Mon–Sat 8–18, Sun & holidays 9–16.

18:00

Back to the centre, dinner at a kafana and a walk.

Day 2

Lake Gruža and Borač

09:00

Drive out to Lake Gruža, about twenty kilometres west of town — a reservoir with a road round it and spots for fishing.

11:00

Borač, a medieval fort on a volcanic outcrop above the lake. Entry is free, with no organised tour — the grounds are open.

13:00

Lunch by the water, or head back towards Kragujevac.

15:00

A free afternoon by the water, then back into the centre at the end of day two.

Frequently asked

Before you go

Short answers to what people ask most before setting out.

Can Gruža and Borač be done without a car?

Not practically — no public transport reaches the lake or the fort, so it's a car or an organised trip.

How much time does the 21 October Museum need?

2–3 h, and arriving at least 45 minutes before closing is recommended.

Does any of this plan work on a Monday?

The Šumarice museum opens on Mondays too; the theatre depends only on its performance schedule, not the day of the week.
