Where to go: five more questions →

Kragujevac has one clear day trip: Lake Gruža, known locally as the 'Šumadija sea', and Borač, a medieval fort on a volcanic outcrop above it. Both are open ground with no ticket, but no city transport reaches them — the way in is by car or an organised trip.

Lake Gruža

A reservoir about twenty kilometres west of town, with a road round the shore and spots for fishing — the local name, the 'Šumadija sea', comes from it being the largest body of water in this part of Serbia. Entry is free, with no ticket office and no opening hours — the grounds are open.

Borač

Above the lake stands Borač, a medieval fort built on a volcanic outcrop. There's no organised tour or guide — you climb up freely, on a path from the car park. It's also the reason to drive on from Kragujevac rather than straight back to the centre.

Getting there

Neither the lake nor the fort has a city bus line — the only practical way is your own car or an organised trip. The drive from the centre is short, about twenty kilometres, but without a car the whole destination is off the table.

How much time it takes

  • Half a day for a loop round the lake and the climb up to the fort, without lingering.
  • A full day with lunch by the water and a slower walk — the more common choice, since the day doesn't leave time for another round of the town anyway.
