Mistakes everyone makes in Cluj-Napoca

- St Michael's tower
- open only now and then

Most mistakes in Cluj-Napoca aren't about money but about timing — the wrong day for the museum, arriving too late for the salt mine, a cake bought ahead of time. Here are eight that are easy to avoid once you know about them.
Paying in euro instead of lei
Cluj-Napoca still runs on lei (RON) — Romania is not in the eurozone. Prices on this site are converted to euro for comparison with the rest of the site, but on the ground it's cash or a card in lei that's asked for, not euro.

The Ethnographic Museum on the wrong day
The Ethnographic Museum of Transylvania is open Wed–Sun, shut Monday, Tuesday — arrive on either of those days and you see only the building from outside.

St Michael's tower as a fixed plan
Entry to St Michael's Church at Union Square is free and open daily, but climbing the tower happens only now and then, tied to events — anyone counting on it as a fixed stop on the plan ends up without it.

The Botanical Garden right up to closing
The garden is open daily 9–20 (greenhouses 9–18) — the greenhouses shut earlier than the park itself. Arrive in the late afternoon planning to see everything and the greenhouses are missed.

Matthias Corvinus House and Tailors' Tower as museums
Both monuments are viewed from outside — Matthias Corvinus House is now part of the Art Academy, Tailors' Tower a remnant of the city walls — neither has an interior open to visitors on a regular basis. Looking for a ticket or a queue to get in is a search that goes nowhere.

Langoș at the same price all year
The langoș price at Union Square rises when the square hosts a city fair — the same stall charges less outside that season.

Salina Turda after midday
The last entry to Salina Turda is an hour before closing — leave Cluj-Napoca in the late afternoon and you arrive at a shut gate.

Kürtőskalács bought ahead of time
The dough firms up within an hour or two of baking — bought in the morning for the evening, a kürtőskalács loses what makes it good.

Before you go
Short answers to what people ask most before setting out.
Does Cluj-Napoca use euro?
No. Lei (RON) is what's used — Romania is not in the eurozone. Prices on the site are converted to euro only for comparison.
What day is the Ethnographic Museum closed?
Monday, Tuesday — check before putting the museum on that day's plan.
Can St Michael's tower always be climbed?
No — climbing it happens only now and then, tied to events, unlike entry to the church itself, which is open daily.
