The best time to visit Brașov
Brașov sits in a basin below Mount Postăvarul, so summer can run hot and crowded down in the valley, and winter brings snow and ice to the steep Șchei lanes.

Two things pick the month for Brașov: how hot or cold the city runs, and whether Poiana Brașov above it is set up for skiing or for walking. May, June and September strike the best balance — fewer crowds and no weather extremes. The gap between the coldest and warmest month sits in the table below.
Month by month
Summer runs hot in the valley
Brașov sits in a basin, so the heat lingers in the city despite the mountain above it; the average daily high in July and August is 24–25°C, but that is also the busiest season both in the Old Town and on the way up to Poiana Brașov. Travel then and the plan is to put outdoor stops (Council Square, the walls) in the morning and indoor ones (the Black Church, the museums) in the afternoon.

Winter brings ice
The Șchei lanes are steep and cobbled; snow and ice in winter slow the walk there more than in the flat part of town. The Tâmpa cable car still runs, but occasionally stops in high wind or heavy snow.
Skiing changes the season
From mid-December to the end of March, Poiana Brașov runs as a ski resort — the Postăvarul Express gondola carries skiers up to the ridge. Outside that season, the same gondola carries walkers and hikers, on a different timetable.

For a route further through Transylvania, Cluj-Napoca is the next big stop, about two and a half hours by train, with its own rhythm of season and crowds.
