Mahdia asks for nothing but your feet, one packed day or two unhurried ones. The medina sits on a narrow peninsula that tapers towards its headland, so the walk is one line from the gate to the lighthouse. The second day is left for the town beach or a trip to the amphitheatre at El Jem.
The walk starts where the peninsula narrows the most, at Skifa el Kahla, the medina's former sole land gate. The Fatimid caliph al-Mahdi founded the city in 921 as the first capital of his dynasty, before power moved on to Cairo, and defence dictated the walls here. A narrow gate was easy to hold, and the peninsula behind it was almost an island. half an hour for the passage and the climb to the terrace above the gate.
Right past the gate stands the Great (Fatimid) Mosque of Mahdia, founded that same year, 921, and rebuilt between 1961 and 1965 to its original plan. Entry to the courtyard is free, since the prayer hall itself stays closed to visitors, 20 min enough for a look from the threshold.
The lanes past the mosque lead to the silk weavers' workshops. Mahdia was long known as the town of silk, and around three hundred weavers still work across some thirty workshops in the medina — the looms are heard before they're seen. 1 h to walk the lanes without stopping, longer if you pause at every loom.
From there the medina keeps narrowing east, up to the hill where Borj El Kebir stands, an Ottoman fort guarding the entrance to the harbour. Entry is €2.37, the fort is open winter 9am–4pm, summer 9am–5pm, Ramadan 9am–4pm and never closes for the day. Beside it stands the Mahdia Regional Museum, shut on Mondays, with the peninsula's ethnographic and archaeological collections.
From the fort's walls the path goes on to the very tip of the peninsula, to Cape Africa with its lighthouse and the marine cemetery next to it, the last stretch of land before open sea. Entry is free, half an hour for the cape and the cemetery together.
The second day is left open. The town beach lies just south of the medina, with no ticket and none of the paid loungers of the hotel zones in Sousse or Hammamet. Anyone who prefers dry land can take the amphitheatre at El Jem as a half-day trip, by direct louage or via Sousse, since there is no direct line from Mahdia. Mahdia itself is entered through Monastir airport: the Sahel Metro runs to its final stop in town, 55–70 min and €0.59–0.89.
