Where to go: five more questions →

Day one is a loop in the same order the Mahdia page describes it: from Skifa el Kahla, through the medina and its silk weavers, to Borj El Kebir and Cape Africa at the very tip of the peninsula. Day two has no fixed plan — the town beach or a trip to the amphitheatre at El Jem, depending on whether the day calls for the sea or the stone.

Day 1

From the gate to the cape

09:00

Skifa el Kahla. A vaulted passage through the walls where the peninsula narrows the most, half an hour.

09:45

The Great Mosque, right past the gate. Entry to the courtyard free, 20 min, since the prayer hall itself is closed to visitors.

10:15

The medina and its silk weavers. The looms are heard before they're seen, 1 h without stopping, longer if you pause at every one.

11:30

Borj El Kebir, at the top of the medina. Entry €2.37, open winter 9am–4pm, summer 9am–5pm, Ramadan 9am–4pm.

12:15

The Mahdia Regional Museum, right beside the fort — shut on Mondays, the peninsula's ethnographic and archaeological collections.

13:00

Lunch. Grilled fish, priced as a fishing town, €11.87–20.77.

15:00

A break. The hottest part of the day; your room, a café or the shade, it makes no difference.

16:30

Cape Africa and the marine cemetery, at the very tip of the peninsula. half an hour, free to enter.

18:30

Dinner in town; fish couscous, a Sahel speciality, €5.34–8.90.

Day 2

The beach or El Jem

09:30

The town beach, just south of the medina. Entry free, none of the paid loungers of the hotel zones.

12:30

Lunch. Ojja, eggs in a spicy tomato sauce, €4.45–7.42.

14:00

A free afternoon on the beach.

What to drop when you're running late

  • Late start? Skip the Regional Museum. The peninsula's history is already in the medina and the fort; the museum only adds detail.
  • Heat in the afternoon? Move Cape Africa to 17:30, since it's open then and there's no shade earlier in the day.
