Where to go: five more questions →

The best months for Mahdia are June and September. The town sits on the same stretch of the Sahel coast as Sousse, 1 h further up the line, so it carries the same pattern: a hot July and August, a mild winter that closes nothing but the early dark. The season changes the fort's opening hours too, not just the temperature at the cape.

Which month to pick

MonthDaily mean and rain
January13 °C, 3 rainy days
February14 °C, 6 rainy days
March15 °C, 6 rainy days
April17 °C, 4 rainy days
May21 °C, 5 rainy days
June25 °C, 1 rainy day
July28 °C, no rain
August28 °C, 1 rainy day
September27 °C, 2 rainy days
October23 °C, 4 rainy days
November18 °C, 4 rainy days
December14 °C, 6 rainy days

If you only pick one month — September. Temperature is the mean over the whole day (not the daily high), and a rainy day has at least 1 mm of rain; averages for 2021–2024.

June and September keep the sea bearable and the medina free of the worst midday sun — June and September. April and May are cooler for swimming, but that's exactly why they're better for the climb up Borj El Kebir and the long loop out to Cape Africa without a break in the shade.

Summer

Hot, with seasonal hours

July and August are the hottest months on this stretch of coast, the same pattern as Sousse. Borj El Kebir runs longer hours in summer as a result, 9am–5pm — the last hour before closing is also the coolest one for the climb up the tower. The plan splits accordingly: the medina and fort in the morning, a break at midday, the cape and beach late afternoon.

Winter

Quiet, with nothing shut

In winter the fort keeps shorter hours, 9am–4pm, but neither the medina nor Cape Africa closes anything for the cold. All you lose is a long stretch lying on the beach; the walking loop still fits into one unhurried day.

  • Start early in summer. Skifa el Kahla and the mosque in the morning, since there's no shade later on the climb to the fort.
  • Check hours ahead during Ramadan. Borj El Kebir then runs 9am–4pm, shorter than outside the fast.
