Hervartov

Worth it, and the closest

The Roman Catholic wooden church of St Francis of Assisi in Hervartov was built in the late 15th century from red spruce, in the Gothic style, and its exterior has stayed almost untouched since. It was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2008, as part of the joint listing of wooden churches in the Slovak Carpathians. The village is around ten kilometres from Bardejov.

Svidník

Worth it for the museum and open-air site

Svidník sits on the main road towards the Polish border and northern Slovakia, and is known for the Museum of Ukrainian Culture — a cultural-history exhibition in the town centre and a separate open-air site a little further out, both devoted to the Ukrainian minority of this part of the country. A regular bus line runs to the town.

Košice, Kraków and Spiš Castle

Košice, the largest city in eastern Slovakia, is 77 km from Bardejov, about an hour and a half by bus. Across the border to the north, Kraków in Poland has a direct bus line from Bardejov, a ride of several hours — long enough that it only really makes sense with a night's stay, not as a day trip.
