Day trips from Budapest
Szentendre, Visegrád and Esztergom sit along the same river, each reachable by train or suburban rail, no organised transport required; further out, Eger and Lake Balaton want a day or two of their own.
- Szentendre
- about 40 min (one way) by HÉV
- Visegrád
- by bus or train
- Esztergom
- about 1 h – 1 h 15 (one way) by train

Three destinations sit along the same river north of the city, in what's called the Danube Bend: Szentendre is the closest, Esztergom the furthest, Visegrád in between. None needs organised transport — a train or suburban line reaches all three — but the boat to Visegrád does not run in summer 2026.
Szentendre
A small town of art galleries and museums on the Danube's bank, about 40 min (one way) on the HÉV suburban train (line H5) from Batthyány tér — no change, no organised tour needed. half a day covers the centre and the riverfront.

Visegrád
A fortress above a bend in the river, looking down on the point where the Danube turns south — VOLÁNBUSZ bus (880) or MAHART boat. MAHART has suspended its Budapest–Visegrád boat for the period 13 Jul–30 Sep 2026, due to low Danube water levels; outside that window the boat remains an option, and the bus runs year-round. a full day (usually combined with Szentendre/Esztergom).

Esztergom
Hungary's former first capital, today home to a basilica on a hill above the river, about 1 h – 1 h 15 (one way) by train train from Nyugati station. half a day.
Further out
Eger and Lake Balaton are not day trips in the strict sense — each wants at least one night to be worth the journey. Eger holds the fortress that held off an Ottoman army in 1552 and the wine cellars behind Egri Bikavér; Balaton is the largest lake in Central Europe, with beaches and spa towns along both shores.

Győr
Győr sits on the rail line towards Vienna, with trains from Keleti station. The centre is half a day on foot, and Pannonhalma Archabbey fills a second day.

How long each takes
Travel time one way, HÉV/train/bus, no organised tour.
Combining all three, in practice
- All three run in the same direction, north. With an early start, two fit into one day — Szentendre and Visegrád are the closest pairing.
- The Visegrád boat does not run 13 Jul–30 Sep 2026. Bus and train are unaffected.
