The best time to visit Budapest
Budapest has a continental climate with no sea to soften it — summer can push past 30°C, winter is cold and grey, and the best balance of weather and crowds falls in late spring and early autumn.

Two things pick the month for Budapest: whether the heat is bearable in a city with no sea nearby, and whether the Danube carries enough water for boats into the Danube Bend. Late spring and early autumn deliver both — comfortable temperatures and steady river traffic. The table below turns each month into degrees, from January's sub-zero mornings to the July heat that empties riverside terraces until evening.

Summer is hot
The average for July and August sits around 28°C, but individual days regularly clear 30°C — the city sits deep inland, with no sea to cut the heat. Széchenyi Baths stay the best escape, since the outdoor pools keep running into the evening as the temperature drops; the basilica, the synagogue and the castle are worth saving for the middle of the day, when shade is the only difference between old stone walls and the street outside.

A low Danube changes day trips
In summer 2026 the Danube's water level dropped low enough to threaten river traffic, so MAHART suspended its Budapest–Visegrád boat for the period 13 Jul–30 Sep 2026. Bus and train still run to Szentendre, Visegrád and Esztergom — only the boat option changes, and it's worth checking before setting off if the plan was to travel by water.

The rest of the plan depends less on the month and more on what's actually wanted from the city.

And two practical notes that hold regardless of season:

Before you go
Short answers to what people ask most before setting out.
Which month is best for a Budapest trip?
Apr–Jun · Sep–Oct — warm enough for a full day outdoors, cool enough that the basilica and the synagogue aren't the only shade in the city.
How much heat does a Budapest summer bring?
The average sits around 28°C in July and August, but some days clear 30°C with no sea nearby to catch a breeze — Széchenyi Baths stay open longer into the evening than the churches and museums do.
Do boats to Visegrád run in summer 2026?
No — the route is suspended 13 Jul–30 Sep 2026 due to low Danube water levels; bus and train still run.
