Where to go: five more questions →

Most mistakes in Sousse happen before you even reach the hotel: a transfer gets booked instead of the train, or a car for a medina that has no room for one. The fix for each of those four sits below.

1. A paid transfer instead of the Sahel Metro

A hotel transfer and a private taxi from Monastir airport are offered right at the terminal exit, at a price posted nowhere in public. The Sahel Metro station sits at the same terminal, €0.45–0.60 a ticket, up to 45 min to Sousse. The gap is felt as soon as the return trip a week later is added.

2. A car for the medina

The medina's streets are narrow, many closed to traffic, and parking around the walls is scarce with no clear price. Everything in town itself is a walk; a car only makes sense for Kairouan, and then with a driver, not a self-drive.

3. Kantaoui without pricing in the taxi

A hotel rate in Kantaoui can look lower than one in town, but every evening on the Boujaffar quay or in the medina means a taxi both ways. Whoever doesn't budget for that pays the difference across seven days of rides.

4. The kasbah museum on a Monday

The archaeological museum in the kasbah is shut Monday. Anyone in town for a single day that happens to fall on a Monday loses the mosaics with no substitute — the ribat and the souk are open that day. Worth fitting the date into the schedule before it's built around the kasbah.

Frequently asked

Before you go

Short answers to what people ask most before setting out.

Do you need a car in Sousse?

Not in town itself; only for Kairouan, and then with a driver, since the railway doesn't reach it.

What's closed on Mondays?

The archaeological museum in the kasbah, Monday. The ribat and the souk are open.

Is a private airport transfer worth it?

Rarely: the Sahel Metro (SNCFT), a train from the station at the airport itself to Sousse (Bab Jedid); louage or taxi as alternatives is cheaper, at €0.45–0.60 a ticket.
