Where to go: five more questions →

Subotica is small enough to cover on its own in a day, so the most natural day trip is to Palić, eight kilometres east. What you see there has its own page; what's here is just the decision to go, and how.

Palić, eight kilometres east

The Water Tower and the Great Terrace, both from 1912, stand in the lakeside park, by the same architects who gave Subotica its Town Hall — Komor and Jakab. Park entry is free.

Getting there

A cycle path runs straight from the centre of Subotica to the lake, about half an hour's ride; by car it's about ten minutes.

Does it fit alongside one day in the city

Not without rushing. The synagogue, the tower tour and the Raichle Palace already fill the morning and afternoon of day one, and the tower tour runs only at noon — adding Palić the same day would mean choosing between those three stops and the lake. A second, shorter day settles that without squeezing.

  • The Water Tower and the terrace are outdoors. Rain makes the waterfront less pleasant, but entry stays the same.
  • For a late afternoon or an evening train, a car is the safer choice. A bike needs time to get back in daylight.

Szeged

The other direction is across the border: Szeged, a city on the Tisza with the Votive Church, the Reök Palace, the New Synagogue and Széchenyi Square. It deserves a page of its own, so it only gets a mention here.
