Where to stay in Ulcinj

In Ulcinj the area follows the beach it leads to. The old town sits by Mala Plaža, Velika Plaža has its own strip of hotels, and Ada Bojana is its own story.

Where to go: five more questions →

Ulcinj has no single hub for places to stay but three separate strips: the old town is dense and walkable, Velika Plaža is a thirteen-kilometre stretch with hotels and campsites along the sand, and Ada Bojana sits apart and quieter. Which of the three suits you depends on whether the sea is the reason you came, or the town is.

The old town — on foot to everything

The quarter inside the walls and right around them holds almost everything Ulcinj offers away from the beach. The Balšić Tower, narrow streets and taverns all sit within a few minutes' walk, and Mala Plaža is just below the walls, making this the only area where a day can pass without a car. It gets busiest here in summer; reaching Velika Plaža means a drive, since walking covers only the old town and Mala Plaža below it.

Velika Plaža — a choice along the whole beach

Hotels, flats and campsites line the whole beach, from the busiest northern end to the emptier south nearer Ada Bojana. Kitesurfers usually settle near the north, where the schools operate. The south stays quieter, though it is still no walk from the old town.

Ada Bojana — set apart and quieter

The island at the mouth of the Bojana has the smallest supply of the three areas. Mostly it's restaurants on the water and a handful of private rentals, rarely anything resembling a hotel chain. It suits a stay where quiet outranks proximity to anything else, and getting to the centre or to Velika Plaža means a car or a taxi.

What to check before booking

  • The tourist tax is not in the price shown. €1 (per person/night, all categories) per person per night, all categories, paid on the spot.
  • 'Near the beach' does not mean the same thing in all three areas. The old town sits by Mala Plaža; on Velika Plaža and Ada Bojana check the exact distance on a map, not just the area's name.
