Where to go: five more questions →

This plan follows the town's geography. Velika Plaža sits south-east of the centre, the old town is on the headland itself, and the salt pans and Ada Bojana both lie south of town, on the same road, which is why they share day three. The first is in the morning for the birds, the second in the afternoon for lunch and the beach.

Day 1

Velika Plaža

09:00

Arrival Podgorica airport (TGD), then bus (Zejdin Tours), direct line, about 1 h 35 for €12.70.

10:00

Velika Plaža, free. The northern end carries the most facilities, sunbeds and bars; the south is emptier. Pick a spot by how much quiet you want; the first free sign is a poor guide.

12:30

A kitesurf school runs on the northern stretch, for those who want to ride the wind rather than just lie next to it. The basic course is from €259 (basic course), recommended; out of season the school is closed, off-season (Oct–Apr).

19:30

Dinner in town, grilled fish, €12–17 (fish).

Day 2

The old town and Mala Plaža

09:00

The old town, free (entering the quarter). The narrow streets inside the walls are empty in the morning, a good time for the Balšić Tower and the view from the ramparts before the day-trip buses arrive.

10:30

Mala Plaža, right below the walls, free. The beach is shingle rather than sand, with no car access; you walk straight from the old town to your towel.

13:00

Lunch in town, Margherita pizza €6 or seafood pasta €9.

19:30

Dinner overlooking Mala Plaža, as the sun goes down over the water.

Day 3

The salt pans and Ada Bojana

08:00

The Ulcinj Salina, recommended (guided tours); birds are most active early, before the sun sends them and the watchers both away.

10:30

From there further south, by car or taxi, to Ada Bojana, at the river mouth, free.

12:30

Lunch at one of the restaurants on wooden platforms over the Bojana, with fish from the river instead of the sea.

15:00

The afternoon on the island; the naturist section is mostly on one side, so the choice is best made on arrival, well before the last minute.

Frequently asked

Before you go

Short answers to what people ask most before setting out.

Can the salt pans and Ada Bojana be done in one day?

Yes, both lie south of town, on the same road. The salt pans in the morning for the birds, Ada Bojana afterwards for lunch and the beach.

When is it best to visit Velika Plaža — morning or afternoon?

Morning for a calm swim, afternoon for wind and kitesurfing. The same sand carries both, just at different times of day.

Should the kitesurf course be booked ahead?

recommended, the school runs seasonally, so a same-day slot is not always open.
