San Quirico d'Orcia is the base with the shortest average drive to the other four towns — San Quirico–Bagno Vignoni 5 km · San Quirico–Pienza 10 km · Pienza–Montepulciano 14.3 km (14 min) · Pienza–Montalcino 22.8 km (25 min). A night is mostly an agriturismo or a B&B, €45–60 per person.
The base with the shortest drive
The village sits at the SP146 crossroads. From there every day in the itinerary is a one-way drive, with no moving of luggage between nights.

An agriturismo instead of a hotel
A night in the valley is most often an agriturismo or a B&B, €45–60 per person. So the drive decides the base.
No hostel
The only cheap option is the Ostello Parrocchia Collegiata in San Quirico, a donation-based shelter for pilgrims on the Via Francigena. It has no price list, so it is not a commercial hostel.

When a different base makes sense
Anyone spending more time in Montepulciano and Montalcino, on the eastern and southern side of the valley, can shift the base closer to them — Pienza sits halfway and keeps a shorter drive in both directions. For a stay of two to three days, San Quirico stays the simpler choice.

Before you go
Short answers to what people ask most before setting out.
Why San Quirico, not Pienza or Montalcino?
It has the shortest average drive to the other four towns, San Quirico–Bagno Vignoni 5 km · San Quirico–Pienza 10 km · Pienza–Montepulciano 14.3 km (14 min) · Pienza–Montalcino 22.8 km (25 min), so the total driving is less.
Is there a hostel in the valley?
Not in the usual sense — only a donation-based pilgrim shelter in San Quirico.
