Getting around Val d'Orcia

Without a car this valley doesn't work as a plan — public transport runs rarely and doesn't link the towns in one loop.

Where to go: five more questions →

The Val d'Orcia has no airport of its own, and the way in is Florence (FLR airport), with San Quirico about 1 h 30 by car from it. Public transport exists in part. Line 112 runs Siena–Buonconvento–San Quirico–Pienza–Montepulciano, but rarely and mostly on weekdays, so no day across all five towns fits its timetable.

1. Florence

The way into the valley

The car is picked up in Florence. San Quirico, the base of the valley, is about 1 h 30 by car away.

2. Why a car is the only practical way

Line 112 doesn't start from Florence or the airport, and it runs even less often at weekends than on weekdays. No line links all five towns in a single day, so a car stays the only option for the itinerary's plan.

3. The cost of renting

Economy class, measured at Siena airport — the closest rental hub after Florence — runs €26–32 a day.

4. Inside each village: everything on foot

The historic centres are narrow and mostly closed to vehicles; parking sits at the edge of each town, a few minutes' walk from the centre. Every stop in the itinerary works this way, from San Quirico to Montepulciano. Park and walk.
