The best time to visit Val d'Orcia
The same hills look different in two periods: green in spring, golden after the harvest — and between them comes heat with no air conditioning outside the car.

- Apr–May, Sep–Oct
- Spring
- Green hills, crops still growing
- Autumn
- Harvest

The best time for the Val d'Orcia is Apr–May, Sep–Oct. The valley lies inland, and the roads between villages cross open hills, so the itinerary's plan is easier to drive outside the hottest months.
Two periods, two views
If you only pick one month — October. Temperature is the mean over the whole day (not the daily high), and a rainy day has at least 1 mm of rain; averages for 2021–2024.
The same hills are green in April and May, and golden and brown in September and October. Neither view is better, just different: spring keeps the crops growing, and autumn brings the harvest and less heat on the road between villages.

Hot, with no shade on the road
The drive crosses open hills, so stopping at viewpoints is harder than in spring or autumn. The Vitaleta Chapel is reached only on foot from the car park on the SP146, so you don't take that path at noon; leave it for late afternoon, as the itinerary suggests.

Outside these two periods
Sant'Antimo, the Montalcino fortress courtyard and Horti Leonini run all year and have no season; only the temperature on the drive there and the colour of the fields along the way change.
