The best time to visit Zagori
The same stone and the same gorge all twelve months — what changes is whether the passes are open and whether the Vikos trail is dry.
- Best
- May–Jun, Sep–Oct
- Winter
- The passes can close with snow
- The gorge
- The trail is safest when dry

Zagori is a mountain region, so the date here changes more than the crowds — it decides whether you can even get through: May–Jun, Sep–Oct; passes close in winter. Outside that window the passes can close with snow, and the Vikos Gorge turns slippery and riskier to descend after heavy rain.
Three seasons, three different reasons: spring and autumn keep the passes open and the trail dry, winter can shut the roads with snow, and summer brings heat with no shade on the descent.
Best time to go: May–Jun, Sep–Oct; passes close in winter
The passes are open, the gorge trail is dry, and the villages sit clear of winter frost and of the summer heat that would make the walk down to the Voidomatis river unpleasant.

Winter
Snow can close the passes around the villages, and the days are short for a long one-way descent through the gorge. The stone villages and the bridges at Kipi stay reachable even then, but the Vikos Gorge isn't recommended as a solo attempt in this period.

Summer
The passes are open and the trail is dry, but the shadeless descent through the gorge can be gruelling; the rock pools near Papingo and the Voidomatis river — cold even at the height of summer — become the main reason to linger in the water rather than on the trail.

Zagori isn't chosen for warmth — it's chosen for the stone, the bridges and the gorge; the weather here affects whether you reach them, not just how pleasant it is.
