For Zagori you rent a car: rental car from Ioannina — no public transport. The car is picked up at Ioannina airport, and from there Monodendri is 47 min to Monodendri (38.8 km). Rental costs €55–60 per day for the cheapest classes.
From Ioannina to the villages
Ioannina airport is the only place to pick up a car in the region. The whole network of villages rests on one car. Public transport: none (a car is essential).

Between the villages
Distances between bases: Ioannina–Monodendri 39 km · Monodendri–Papingo 31 km · gorge trail (Monodendri–Vikos village) 12 km. Parking at the stone bridges and at the Papingo rock pools is free, and the sites themselves have no ticket.
A trail in one direction
The trail through the Vikos Gorge is one-way, twelve kilometres from Monodendri to Vikos village, and there is no public transport at either end. Anyone not hiking reaches the viewpoints by the Agia Paraskevi monastery by car.
Anyone who sets off through the gorge with a car has to work out how to get back to it — there is no regular service at the end of the trail.

Winter
In winter the passes can close with snow, so the road conditions are checked before setting off. The car hire is planned for the months when the roads are open.
