Where to stay in Split
Five quarters within walking distance of the palace — and the one difference between them you only hear after midnight.
- Inside the palace
- Atmosphere and everything at the door
- Varoš
- Five minutes from the palace
- Bačvice
- A beach at the door

In Split the choice of where to stay is not about distance but noise. The old town is small and everything is walking distance, but inside the palace the terraces work at night and closing the window does not fix it — so you choose between atmosphere and sleep, not between proximity and price.
Five choices and what each really means
Everything is walking distance — the difference is noise, not kilometres
The palace at night
Several thousand people live inside the walls and several dozen bars operate there, and the lanes are narrow and stone, so sound bounces and rises. The same Peristyle that is empty at eight in the morning is a concert at eleven at night. Sleep easily and you have the best location in town; sleep lightly and you have two sleepless nights and then you move.

When the port matters more than the view
If you are going to the islands from Split, being near the port is worth more than a terrace view. Ferries, catamarans, intercity buses and the train all leave from the same stretch of waterfront, east of the palace, so a room there turns a morning departure with a case into a few minutes' walk instead of a taxi.

If it has to be the palace, ask the host what the room looks onto. A window above a café on the Peristyle or the main street and a window onto a side passage are not the same room after midnight.

Before you go
Short answers to what people ask most before setting out.
Is it worth sleeping inside Diocletian's Palace?
If noise does not wake you, yes — everything is at the door. If it does, no: the bars inside work late, and Varoš is five minutes away and quiet.
Which quarter suits a first visit?
Varoš. Five minutes from the palace, stone houses and quiet; the price is the climb and the steps.
Where should I stay if I am going to the islands?
By the port: ferries, catamarans, buses and the train leave from the same waterfront, so a morning departure is a few minutes' walk instead of a taxi.
