In brief

Three Gaudí buildings in Barcelona cost more than the whole of old Valencia. One Valencia ticket still costs more than the Sagrada Família.

Valencia usually gets called a cheaper Barcelona on the strength of cost-of-living indexes, but a visitor sees the difference most clearly at the ticket desk. Three Gaudí buildings in Barcelona cost more than the whole of old Valencia put together, and Valencia has no tourist tax on top. There is one exception, and it's called the Oceanogràfic.

The ticket desk

That's where the gap is

Barcelona is seen through tickets: the Sagrada Família without the towers is €26, the Monumental Zone of Park Güell €18, Casa Batlló from €29. Old Valencia is seen almost for free: the cathedral is €12, the Miguelete bell tower €3, the Silk Exchange €2, the Serranos Towers €2 — and nothing at all on Sundays and holidays. The Turia park, eight and a half kilometres across the city, charges nothing.

Verdict — three Gaudí sites cost more than four Valencia monuments together. The Silk Exchange and the Serranos Towers are free on Sundays and holidays; prices are for adults.

The tax

Barcelona has one, Valencia doesn't

Barcelona charges a tourist tax per person per night — €12 in a five-star hotel — and the city surcharge rises by a euro a year until 2029. Valencia has none: the regional law that was to bring one in was repealed in November 2023 before it ever applied, and the city hasn't introduced one of its own. Over four nights for two, it's a line that simply disappears in Valencia.

The exception

The Oceanogràfic

One Valencia ticket sits at Barcelona level, and above it. The Oceanogràfic in the City of Arts and Sciences costs €36–43 depending on season — more than the Sagrada Família — and the combined ticket with the science museum and the Hemisfèric €44–51. Walking between the buildings and around the pools is free, so the complex can be seen for nothing; you pay only for what's inside.

The City of Arts and Sciences: walking between the buildings costs nothing, and the aquarium is the one Valencia ticket dearer than the Sagrada Família.

Paella

Cheap only for two, and at lunch

Paella is a lunch dish, not a dinner one, and the restaurants that cook it properly ask for a booking and a minimum of two portions. For someone on their own that means paella is either double the price or off the menu, and for anyone after it at eight in the evening, that they risk the export version, the one already sitting on the counter. Cheap Valencia holds here only for people eating in company, at midday.

So Valencia is cheaper where Barcelona charges for its fame — at the door to Gaudí and in the tax on the room. Go to Barcelona for Gaudí and you pay for Gaudí; go to Valencia for the city and you get it almost free, right up to the aquarium door.

Where next

What now

If this sounds like your trip, start here.

  1. Eat paella at lunch, not dinner — the original comes with chicken and rabbit, not seafood.
  2. Save on food and lodging, not on transport: the monthly transit pass costs more here than in Barcelona.
  3. Reckon on a set lunch around €16 — that is the line where Valencia parts ways with Barcelona.
