A day trip from Valencia is chosen by the transport, because nearly everything worth the trip is closer by train and metro than the map suggests. Sagunto and Xàtiva take from half a day to a whole one, Llíria and Alboraia are short outings from the city, and the Albufera already has its place in the itinerary.

Sagunto

The Cercanías C6 train and the Metrobus lines L111, L113 and L115 both run to Sagunto. The town has a Roman theatre, a castle above it, a medieval Jewish quarter, the old blast furnaces and, a little further, the beach of Almardà. The monuments are free to enter.

It suits anyone who likes ruins and views from a height, and it fills half a day. Take the C6 from the city, then walk up to the castle and the theatre. Keep Almardà for lunch by the water. With no car, a guided tour from Valencia is the simplest route, since it handles the timing for you.

Xàtiva

The C-2 line (Valencia Nord, Xàtiva, Moixent) takes about 49 minutes, with a train roughly every 20 minutes. The station is on Avenida Ausiàs March, around 10 minutes on foot from the historic centre.

The castle sits on a ridge above the old town, the Collegiate Church of Santa María stands below, and the Almodí museum keeps a portrait of Philip V hung upside down. Xàtiva was also the birthplace of the Borgia family. The climb to the castle is real, so the trip suits a person ready for a whole day on foot. An organised tour from Valencia takes the planning out of it for those without a car.

Llíria and Alboraia

Llíria is reached by metro line L2 or by the Metrobus lines L145 and 245, and it offers the Tossal de Sant Miquel, the Roman baths known as Mura and a monastery. Alboraia lies on metro lines L3 and L9, among fields of chufa, with horchata bars where the drink is made. Both are short outings that need no train. The story of Alboraia is told on the page of hidden corners, linked below.

The Albufera

Bus 25 of the city company runs to El Palmar, where the jetty and the boats are. Fare: €2. The park can also be reached by the C1 train to Sollana, and the itinerary describes the rest, so this page does not repeat it.

What fits into one day

Sagunto and Almardà belong together in one day. Xàtiva takes up the whole day by itself. Llíria and Alboraia can be joined, as both are on the metro. Two train trips in one day are not worth planning, so the safest advice is one trip per day.
