What Tunis costs

Tunis is one of the cheaper capitals on the Mediterranean — the biggest cost of the day isn't a ticket, it's where you choose to eat.

Where to go: five more questions →

In Tunis a day is rarely counted by ticket, more often by meal. The medina, the avenue, the souks and Tourbet el Bey are entered without a ticket or paid for at the door; the one larger single figure is the Bardo. What actually changes a day is whether you eat from a stall, at a place with a set lunch, or at a restaurant with table service.

By item

ItemAmount
A hostel bed, per night€15–18
Breakfast or street food€1.30–1.80
A set lunch menu€2.60–4.50
A restaurant main course, no drink€7.10–10.40
The Bardo ticket€8.90
The shared Carthage ticket (day trip)€6
The airport bus, line 35€0.30
The TGM train, per ride€0.24

The biggest variable — Food — the street or a restaurant changes the day more than any ticket. All prices per person, in euros, converted at the Banque Centrale de Tunisie rate of 24 September 2026 (1 EUR = 3.3699 TND).

The medina, the avenue and the souks are entered without a ticket, and Tourbet el Bey is paid at the door, with no price published in advance. So a day without the Bardo or a trip runs almost entirely on food and a ride or two by train or bus — and a day with the Bardo is the one that looks the most expensive on paper.

What brings the day down

Street food and a set-menu lunch keep a day low; a restaurant with a tablecloth doubles the same plate. The shared Carthage ticket is bought once at the first site and covers every other one the same day — buying it again at the next gate is unnecessary.

Frequently asked

Before you go

Short answers to what people ask most before setting out.

How much do you need per day in Tunis, without a trip out?

Most goes on food; a hostel bed and entry to the medina, the avenue and the souks add nothing, since they're free. The one bigger item is the Bardo, €8.90.

Is it cheaper to eat on the street than in a restaurant?

It is — €1.30–1.80 from a stall against €7.10–10.40 for a main course at a sit-down place, no drink included.

What's the biggest cost if you also go to Carthage?

The shared €6 ticket for every site the same day, plus the TGM train at €0.24 per ride, each way.
