The best time to visit Kraków
Temperature alone doesn't decide — winter air and Wawel's summer queues shift the recommendation more than the degrees do.

- Coldest
- January, averaging 0.3°C

Kraków has a continental climate, with a clear split between summer and winter. July is the warmest month, averaging 20.4°C, with August close behind at 20.3°C. May and July share the most rainy days, fourteen each. May, June and September sit in between — warm enough for long walks, without the winter air or the thickest queues summer brings to Wawel.
Kraków month by month
Temperature is the mean over the whole day (not the daily high), and a rainy day has at least 1 mm of rain; averages for 2021–2024.

Why May, June and September
May, June and September carry enough warmth for walking over the hill and around Kazimierz without a winter coat, and they sit outside July and August, when Wawel's queues run longest and the city takes in the most tour coaches. June in particular sees less rain than May or July — just eleven days on average.
The valley traps the polluted air
January is the coldest month, averaging 0.3°C, but temperature isn't the only reason to avoid it: the valley Kraków sits in holds polluted air on windless days, especially through the heating season. Anyone who still comes in winter gets an empty Rynek and lower bed prices.

Summer changes Wawel more than the city
The Old Town itself takes summer well — wide streets, trees along the Planty. Wawel is the one that feels the crowd: the daily ticket caps fill earlier, and the morning queue for entry can run long. Outside July and August the same visit goes without waiting.

December's market on the square
The Christmas market on the Main Square runs in December, and that's the reason to come then, along with the cold and the shorter days. Outdoor trips like Kościuszko Mound lose their point then — the view is the same, but the wait for a hot drink afterwards runs longer.

Before you go
Short answers to what people ask most before setting out.
Is January dangerous in Kraków because of the air?
A short visit isn't dangerous. The valley can hold pollution for days without wind, so anyone sensitive to that should pick another month.
