Day trips from San Gimignano
Three day trips out of San Gimignano run in three different directions — all Tuscan hill towns, no two alike.
- Siena
- Bus 130, a full day, about 1 h 15
- Volterra
- Bus 31, half a day, about 45 min
- Certaldo
- Bus 128, half a day

San Gimignano has no station of its own. Every day trip starts on an Autolinee Toscane bus — the biggest destination is Siena, while Volterra and Certaldo take half a day each.
Siena — a full day
The same 130 line that brings you into San Gimignano runs back too, about 1 h 15 direct, with no change. It's the best link to the town in either direction — via Florence means changing at Poggibonsi and takes longer. A full day is worth it: the Piazza del Campo and the Torre del Mangia alone take up half of one.

Volterra — half a day
The direct 31 line to Volterra runs about 45 min, since a new route was introduced in June 2025; a return ticket costs €11. The hill town is known for alabaster and its Etruscan past. Half a day is enough if you head straight there from San Gimignano.

Certaldo — half a day
Line 128 runs to Certaldo, the birthplace of Giovanni Boccaccio; as with Volterra, half a day is enough.
