Where to go: five more questions →

August is the obvious month for Alghero, and September is usually the better one. Only a handful of seasonal switches matter here: the boats start in April, La Pelosa asks for a ticket from mid-May to mid-October, and the cathedral and the cloister change their hours twice a year. Read the month-by-month climate first, then see which of the switches land on your dates.

Through the year

What changes with the season

PeriodWhat changes
From AprilBoats to Neptune's Grotto begin.
May–SeptemberThe Beach Bus (Cattogno) runs to the cave and the beaches.
15 May–15 OctoberLa Pelosa needs an online ticket, €3.50.
June–OctoberBy land to the cave: park at Casa Gioiosa and take the shuttle, arrive an hour early; November–May go straight up, arrive 40 minutes early.
22 June–15 SeptemberThe airport bus runs every 30 minutes.
June–AugustThe cathedral opens in the evening (19:00–21:30); from September to May in the afternoon (16:00–18:30). Closed Wednesdays and Sundays.
July–SeptemberSan Francesco cloister 9:00–13:00 and 17:00–21:00; October to June 9:30–12:30 and 16:30–20:00.
November–MarchPalmavera closes at 14:00, and so does Anghelu Ruju in November, December, January and March.

Most of these switches pile up between June and September, which is why the rest of the year feels like a different town. The boats still start in April and the cave goes on opening every day the sea allows, so spring and autumn lose little. What changes is the shape of the day, with a longer break at midday and the cathedral moving to its afternoon hours. Palmavera shows the same pattern in miniature: it opens until 18:00 in April, May and October, and until 19:00 from June to September.

Summer

Heat, crowds and tickets

Two summer things are booked rather than chosen. The cave by land needs a time slot, with the car left at Casa Gioiosa and the shuttle up the hill, so you arrive an hour before your tour. La Pelosa needs an online ticket between 15 May and 15 October, priced at €3.50. The airport bus runs every 30 minutes from 22 June to 15 September, and the Beach Bus to the cave and the beaches runs from May to September. The cathedral gains evening hours from June to August, 19:00 to 21:30. That suits a day with a long gap in the middle for the sea. September keeps nearly everything on that list and drops the busiest month, and that is the whole verdict.

Winter

What runs and what does not

Winter in Alghero is a town working a shorter day. From November to March Palmavera closes at 14:00, and Anghelu Ruju does the same in November, December, January and March, while February is not listed in its official schedule. The cave gets easier, because from November to May there is no shuttle and you walk straight to the plateau 40 minutes before your slot. The cathedral keeps afternoon hours of 16:00 to 18:30 from September to May and stays closed on Wednesdays and Sundays. The cloister opens from 9:30 to 12:30 and from 16:30 to 20:00 between October and June, which leaves the middle of the day for lunch. In those four months the necropolis runs from 10:00 to 14:00, so it becomes the morning plan and the rest of the day belongs to the town. The old town, the food and the sea walls cost the same in every month.

Frequently asked

Before you go

Short answers to what people ask most before setting out.

What is the best month for Alghero?

September, with June as the fallback. Both come out well in the climate table above, and in September La Pelosa still needs its ticket, the boats and the Beach Bus still run, and the cloister keeps its long hours. The airport bus stays at 30 minutes until the 15th. The cathedral is also open in the afternoon by then, from 16:00 to 18:30, and it is shut on Wednesdays and Sundays like the rest of the year.

Is Alghero worth visiting in winter?

Yes for the town, the food, the necropolis on its shorter hours and the coral museum. The beaches and the boats are seasonal. A winter visit is about walking the old town, eating and going up to the cave by land. The shuttle is gone then, and you only need to be there 40 minutes early.
