Getting around Alghero
The airport is 10 km away and the old town is crossed on foot
- From the airport
- ARST bus, 20–30 min, €1
- Taxi
- About 15 minutes, about €20
- City bus
- €1 (90 min, ARST)

A car is the last thing the old town needs and the first thing the necropolis asks for. The airport is 10 km from the centre, the bus into town costs €1, and the old town is a restricted zone that you cross on foot. Between those two poles, ARST buses, a taxi and your own feet cover almost everything. Only the day at Anghelu Ruju, where no public bus runs, tips the balance towards four wheels.
From the airport to the centre
The ARST bus stops about a hundred metres from the arrivals exit, runs through Fertilia and reaches the centre in 20–30 min. Buy the ticket from the machine in the terminal, because it costs more on board. The first bus leaves the airport at 5.20 and the last at 23.00, and from the city the first goes at 5.00 and the last at 22.30. Outside summer it runs once an hour. From 22 June to 15 September the service doubles to every 30 minutes, and city fares can be paid by contactless card on board at no extra charge.
A taxi takes about 15 minutes and costs about €20, on the meter. The ranks in town are on Via Vittorio Emanuele 1 and at the port, in the Scalo Tarantiello area. Take the bus unless your flight lands after the last departure at 23.00, since the saving from a taxi is a few minutes and you pay for them.

City buses, the Capo Caccia line and the Beach Bus
Five ARST lines run inside the city between 6.00 and midnight. The fare is €1 (90 min, ARST), and the ticket is valid for 90 minutes. Since summer 2026 the line to Porto Conte and Capo Caccia counts as a city service at city fares, and it runs all year. That line is how you reach the cave without a car, and its stops are the way to Palmavera, which lies about 20 minutes on foot from Lazzaretto and about 15 from Bivio Le Bombarde. From May to September the Beach Bus from the Cattogno company also serves the cave and the beaches, with single and day tickets.
On foot, the restricted zone and parking
The whole historic core is a restricted traffic zone. The gates are active from 0 to 8, from 10.30 to 14.30 and from 16.30 to 24 every day. The sensible rule is to leave the car outside. Piazza dei Mercati is the nearest large car park, about 10 minutes away on foot, with Piazzale della Pace and Via XX Settembre about 12 minutes away. Blue-line spaces are paid by the hour. Inside, a walk from Piazza Civica to the cathedral on Piazza del Duomo takes only a few minutes.
The train to Sassari
A direct train to Sassari takes about 40 minutes, and there are about 21 departures a day, the first at 5.15. That makes Sassari an easy day trip without a car. The operator and the fare are not given in the sources, so they stay out of this page.

Before you go
Short answers to what people ask most before setting out.
Do you need a taxi from Alghero airport?
No. The ARST bus costs €1 and runs every day, and it stops about a hundred metres from the arrivals exit. The cab ride lasts about 15 minutes and costs about €20.
Can you reach Neptune's Grotto by public transport?
Yes. The ARST line to Capo Caccia runs all year at city fares, boats leave the harbour from April and the Beach Bus runs from May to September. The time slot and the ticket for the cave are bought separately, since a bus fare or a boat fare does not include them.
Where do you park in Alghero?
Outside the old town, which is a restricted traffic zone. Piazza dei Mercati is about 10 minutes away on foot, and Piazzale della Pace and Via XX Settembre are about 12. Street spaces marked with blue lines are charged by the hour.
