Mistakes everyone makes in Crete
Anyone arriving in Chania thinking Crete is one town like the other Greek islands gets the order wrong — the car, the gorge season and the Balos dirt track change the plan more than anything else.
- Car
- Almost essential from day two
- Samaria Gorge
- off-season (open May–Oct)
- The Agora in Chania
- Under restoration

Most mistakes on Crete come from assuming the island is one town with a surrounding area, like the smaller Greek islands — that everything is reachable on foot or by bus, that Samaria Gorge is open whenever you fancy it, that every rental firm allows the road to Balos. Here are seven that are easy to avoid once you know about them.
Counting on city-style transport between towns
Crete isn't one town with suburbs — Chania–Heraklion 140 km · Chania–Elafonisi ~75 km · Chania–Omalos (Samaria) 40 km, and public transport between them runs rarely, on its own schedule, not like a city bus. Arrive without a rental booked, expecting to manage day to day by bus, and half the day goes to waiting.

Treating the Agora in Chania as a sure thing
The Agora, the municipal market building in the old town, has been under restoration for years, and its reopening date has slipped more than once. Building it into the plan in advance without checking on the spot risks finding the doors shut.

Samaria out of season with no plan B
off-season (open May–Oct) — outside that period the trail is physically closed, not just quieter. Arrive in April or November counting on a hike through Samaria Gorge, and that day is left without a plan.

Renting a car without checking the Balos clause
The dirt track via Kaliviani to Balos is excluded from insurance by some rental firms. Take it without checking first, and any damage to the car can end up unpaid by the insurance.

Treating Agia Roumeli as a stopover
There is no road out of Agia Roumeli at the bottom of Samaria — only a ferry to Sfakia or Sougia, then a bus. Anyone thinking they'll drive or walk back from there is left stranded with no plan.

Expecting Elafonisi to be a fully set-up beach
Part of the shore at Elafonisi is a protected natural area with no set-up loungers or stalls on the islet itself — arrive without water, food and sun cream expecting to buy them there, and part of the day goes without.

Visiting Knossos in September with summer hours in mind
8–20 summer, 8:30–17 winter — the schedule shortens gradually through September and October, not in one jump in autumn. Arrive in the evening counting on the summer closing time, and the gate is already locked.

Before you go
Short answers to what people ask most before setting out.
Is the Agora in Chania reliably open?
Not guaranteed — the building has been under restoration for years with a reopening date that keeps slipping; check on the spot.
What if you arrive on Crete outside the Samaria Gorge season?
The trail is off-season (open May–Oct) — closed outside that period; the alternative is the shorter Imbros Gorge.
Can every rental car take the Balos dirt track?
No — some firms exclude that stretch from the contract; check before you set off, not on the road itself.
