Crete in 5 days

The first day on foot around Chania, the other four behind the wheel: a gorge, a pink beach, a lagoon and Knossos at the far end of the island.

Where to go: five more questions →

Crete is too big an island for one base and city transport: these five days keep Chania as the starting point, 4–5 days; 7 with the east, and from day two drive to each next stop by car, not by bus. The first day is the only one without a wheel — the town is covered on foot; the rest is a gorge, two beaches and, on the last day, Knossos at the opposite end of the island.

Day 1

Chania, the old town

09:00

Arrival Chania airport (CHQ), then KTEL bus to the centre into the centre — 25–40 min for €2.50.

11:00

First stop is the Venetian harbour, free to enter (free).

13:00

Lunch in the old town: a main course at an ordinary place runs €9–13.

15:00

The afternoon goes to the old town and market, free to enter (free) — the Agora building itself is under restoration, so check on the spot that it's open before you build a stop around it.

19:00

Dinner in the same quarter; the driving starts tomorrow, so this is the last evening without an early start.

Day 2

Samaria Gorge

07:00

An early start towards Omalos — entry 7–13, open till 16, a ticket €10, no (ticket at the gate).

08:00

The descent through the gorge to Agia Roumeli on the coast — there is no road out from there.

17:00

A ferry to Sfakia or to Sougia, then a bus back to Chania: whichever boat you catch is the one that runs — the timetable decides the return time, not the day's plan.

Day 3

Elafonisi

09:00

A drive to the beach in the south-west — Chania–Heraklion 140 km · Chania–Elafonisi ~75 km · Chania–Omalos (Samaria) 40 km.

11:00

Free to enter (free, parking €3–5); part of the lagoon is protected, so there are no set-up loungers right at the water on the islet.

12:00

You reach the islet by wading across the shallow lagoon — shade is scarce, so sun cream and water go in the car, not on a plan to buy them there.

Day 4

Balos and Gramvousa

08:00

Two ways to the Balos lagoon: a boat from Kissamos, or a drive to the village of Kaliviani and then nine kilometres of dirt track up to the car park at the top of the peninsula — some rental firms ban that stretch by contract, so check before you set off.

09:30

From the car park a path descends twenty to forty minutes down to the sand.

13:00

Gramvousa, an islet with a Venetian fortress, sits right alongside — boats from Kissamos usually call at both on the same trip.

Day 5

Knossos and Heraklion

08:00

Heraklion comes last, not first — Chania–Heraklion 140 km · Chania–Elafonisi ~75 km · Chania–Omalos (Samaria) 40 km, by car or on the express KTEL bus, which runs direct with no stops along the way.

10:30

Knossos, five kilometres south of the city: 8–20 summer, 8:30–17 winter, €20 (reduced €10), recommended in high season. Part of the walls and columns on show is early-20th-century concrete reconstruction, not the original stone.

13:00

Opening hours get shorter as the season goes on — check the exact schedule for the day you go, not the month before.

Frequently asked

Before you go

Short answers to what people ask most before setting out.

Can five days on Crete work without a car?

Day one, yes — Chania is covered on foot. From day two, not realistically: Chania–Heraklion 140 km · Chania–Elafonisi ~75 km · Chania–Omalos (Samaria) 40 km, and public transport between them is limited.

Do Heraklion and Knossos have to go last?

Not strictly, but it makes sense — Chania–Heraklion 140 km · Chania–Elafonisi ~75 km · Chania–Omalos (Samaria) 40 km, so it is a drive of its own, not a stop on the way to somewhere else.

What if only three days are available?

Chania, Samaria and one beach (Elafonisi or Balos) cover the western half; Heraklion and Knossos then drop from the plan rather than being shortened.
